Space Makers:

Primary Level

2011 // 2012 // 2013
Kettle's Yard, Cambridge

What is Space Makers?

The Space Makers Project follows the building process of the new Education Wing at Kettle's Yard, Cambridge. Over a two year period, Kettle's Yard are working with one primary school, St Mary's St Neots, one secondary school group, Comberton Village College, two artists - Raksha Patel and Jo Chapman -, Shape East and project evaluators Flow Associates. The project will see the artists work to creatively develop the knowledge and skills of the young people in the fields of architecture and the built environment. Different built environment professionals will be involved in every other session, to support the artists and provide their professional expertise. Guests will be provided by Shape East.

This is a really exciting project to be involved with, in particular as it will also provide an in depth and creative consultation with these young people, to equip them with the means by which they can explore, but also give their own input into the design, development and use of these new education spaces, planned for completion in 2013.

St Mary's Primary School, St Neots and Jo Chapman: Sessions 1,2,3.

The first three sessions of Space Makers were held during October and November 2011. For the primary level group, Artist Jo Chapman worked alongside the pupils from St Marys, St Neots Primary School to explore the outward and inward look of buildings and the history of the spaces in which we live. Equipped with sketchbooks and pencils, art straws, cardboards, fabrics and wooden planks (to name a few of the materials!) they explored the local area, from a march to the expanse of Castle Hill to scribbling and photographing their own secret places hidden within Kettle Yard's house. They dabbled with 2D to 3D constructions, shed building, shapes, colours and Bridget Riley!

We are all looking forward to the next sessions in the New Year.

Please see below a gallery of some of our favourite photos from the first three sessions.
