Young People's Building in Context Workshop

May 2009,
Charles Burrell Humanities School, Thetford

‘Many thanks for the day. It was probably the best thing like that I've ever been involved with" Teacher, Charles Burrell

Shape East was commissioned by Norfolk County Council (as part of their Growing Communities Project) to carry out a one day hands-on workshop with 26 year 8 pupils at the Charles Burrell Humanities School in Thetford.

The young people were given a hands-on introduction to:

  • issues to do with the existing community/area in which they live
  • the planning system
  • a real case study example of a planned new area and how the planning process works
  • a local site through a visit with hands-on activities
  • local history and growth (through a visit to the Ancient House Museum)
  • map reading
  • figure ground drawings
  • infrastructure and local considerations in planning
  • how a site can be mapped out using 3D models and drawings
As part of the day, the young people were asked what they thought was needed in Thetford for young people, young families and older people. When the students were sharing and discussing their ideas it was interesting to see that many of the groups had decided to integrate facilities for all members of the community into one site. They were good at empathising with different audiences and age groups, identifying their specific needs and catering to them.

Shape East are delighted to have been asked by Norfolk Council to work with other museums and schools across the region as part of their Growing Communities Programme.

Feedback :

“‘I was impressed with the planning and delivery of all of the sessions. Without a doubt the children got a lot out of the whole day and took a pride in their finished productions’, Thetford Ancient House Museum”
